HSE Diving Medicals
All diving medicals are conducted face-to-face by Dr Maarten Van Kets, an HSE Approved Medical Examiner of Divers (AMED). Dr Van Kets has practiced medicine since 1991, of which over well 20 years in Occupational Medicine. Every exam is performed personally at our London Bridge (SE1 2PR) or Orpington (BR6 0FE) clinics — or on-site for 7+ divers.
On-site visits: Dr Van Kets comes to your dive site or base for groups of 7+.
Why Are Diving Medicals Necessary?
Diving involves extreme pressure, gas mixtures, and decompression risks. Under Diving at Work Regulations 1997 Regulation 15, an annual fitness certificate is mandatory for all commercial divers in the UK.
What Do Diving Medicals Include?
- Full clinical history & examination (cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological)
- Audiometry (hearing test)
- Spirometry (lung function)
- Visual acuity & colour vision
- ECG (if clinically indicated)
- Chester Step Test (CST): Submaximal aerobic fitness test
- HSE diving fitness certificate
Who Needs It & How Often?
- All commercial divers: Saturation, surface-supplied, SCUBA
- Frequency: Every 12 months
- Employers fund; self-employed arrange own
